On Wednesday, Liverpool will see in November with a Champion's League clash with Maribor at home in Anfield. When they do, Liverpool will look to continue their winning way while at the same time taking command of Group E in the Champion's League Group Stage. Currently atop of the league but even in points with Spartak Moscow, Liverpool play at home to Maribor who they previously beat away in spectacular fashion. Spartak will again face Sevilla, who are a point behind both Liverpool and Spartak.
Liverpool sit in a good position as they look to beat Maribor in back-to-back Champion's League games. And after that, they will travel to face Sevilla away in the Champion's League before finishing the group stage campaign at home vs Spartak. A victory on Wednesday could see the Reds alone atop of the group. And, depending on the outcome of Sevilla and Spartak, it is very likely that a win in the final game at Anfield vs Spartak would win the group for Liverpool.
Really Liverpool do not need to look at opponents schedules and anticipate results, the Reds simply need to take care of their own business and that begins Wednesday night vs Maribor. And there are a lot of indications that favor Liverpool in this endeavor, starting with their last meeting. When Liverpool last faced Maribor, in Slovenia, they came away with a 7-0 thrashing which was also the largest away win ever by an English club in the European Cup/Champions League. In addition, Liverpool are currently unbeaten in the group with 2 draws to go along with that victory.
As good as things look for Liverpool, they are equally bleak for Maribor. Consider Maribor have thus far only scored a single goal in the group stage while at the same time conceding 11 goals. How about their performance on the road? Well, the last time Maribor visited England they were hammered 6-0 by Chelsea. In fact, Maribor have never won a match in England in European competition, losing all four of their previous visits. Even taking out away games, Maribor have struggled period when they face English clubs, having won only one of their nine games against English opposition in all competitions. And, in the Champion's League, Maribor have won just one of their previous 15 games in the Group Stage.
All signs point to another win for Liverpool, but the Reds have to take care of business on the pitch. And if they do, they very well may find themselves sitting alone on top of the Group with two games remaining.
