On Tuesday night, Liverpool are set to square off with Leicester City in a Carabao Cup match. Typically, these are the types of matches where younger players and reserves get an opportunity to impress. Especially for Liverpool, who have a packed schedule, there will be changes to the typical lineup. Manager Jurgen Klopp has already confirmed two changes. Let's look at a potential lineup and react.
Goalkeeper: Danny Ward
One of the confirmed changes for Liverpool will be in goal, as Jurgen Klopp has stated that Danny Ward will be in goal. It will be Ward's first start of the season for Liverpool. Last season, Ward spent the season away from Anfield on a loan to Huddersfield Town. And, Ward was a big reason that Huddersfield is now in the Premier League. Klopp's official statement was that "Danny Ward will play tomorrow if nothing happens overnight."
Defense: Robertson, Gomez, Matip, Alexander-Arnold
Klopp has a few options on defense so he may ultimately go in a different direction. Though I expect to see Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the outside of the back 4. Alexander-Arnold is still developing and could benefit from more playing time in a competitive situation. Andy Robertson has looked good thus far for Liverpool but hasn't gotten many opportunities with Alberto Moreno stealing most of the time at left back. In the middle, Klopp has hinted at using Joe Gomez. Gomez, a natural center back, has been used by Klopp on the outside, at RB filling in for the injured Nathaniel Clyne. Expect to see Klopp slide Gomez back in the middle. Who will he partner with? That's anybody's guess between Matip, Lovren, and Klavan. I'd go with Matip mostly to give Matip and Gomez time together and see how that pairing looks.
Midfield: Grujic, Milner, Can
Again, Klopp has options and could go in a different direction. Expect him to use Marko Grujic as one of the 3 in midfield. I'm going with Milner and Emre Can as well. Milner, to keep him sharp and Emre Can as one of the few "regulars" to keep in the game vs Leicester City. Grujic was Jurgen Klopp's first acquisition at Liverpool and the midfielder will look to impress his manager.
Attack: Woodburn, Solanke, Oxlade-Chamberlain
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another player Klopp will surely start. The versatile player came to Liverpool from Arsenal but has yet had much of an opportunity to demonstrate his value. This will change on Tuesday night. The question is not if Oxlade-Chamberlain will play but rather where? Klopp could use him as a winger or in the midfield. I have him up front along with Dominick Solanke and Ben Woodburn. Woodburn has been impressive with every opportunity he has been given, both with Liverpool and this past international break with his Wales team. Woodburn became Liverpool's youngest goal scorer in history when he scored last November in an EFL match. And, when he scored for Wales recently he became their second youngest scorer ever. Liverpool faithful are excited to see more of the youngster but Jurgen Klopp has been careful in his use of Woodburn as he wants to ensure his development continues and there is not too much pressure thrown at the teenager.
Extras: I expect to see Jon Flanagan suited up as well and wouldn't be shocked to see him start. However, I think he may be a first substitute and Jurgen Klopp will look to get Alexander-Arnold some more time.
