Why this Draw feels like a Loss.....

Sometimes a draw feels like a loss.  Today, after the final whistle at Anfield versus Burnley it certainly had that feeling.  If Liverpool ever needed a statement game, today was the day.  After a difficult week where Jurgen Klopp's defense was under mass scrutiny, Liverpool needed to come out with a big game.

It started prior to this week, when Liverpool were demolished by Manchester City 5-0. Then came the Champion's League game versus Sevilla. After the abysmal game against City, Liverpool were looking for a strong performance. And although they dominated Sevilla most of the evening, defensive lapses led to a disappointing 2-2 draw. Certainly, Liverpool looked the better of the two and should have come away with the win.

After that, Klopp's defense has been under attack.  This time, from the media and supporters as opposed to their opponent on the pitch. Klopp defended his unit, stating the talent is fine they just need to focus and clean-up the mistakes.

Todays game against visitng Burnley provided the Reds to quiet the critics with a strong showing and a needed win. Instead, defensive mistakes along with a lack of finishing led to another draw. A disappointing draw that felt more like a loss.

Liverpool dominated the match. But again, a lack of finishing opportunities along with defensive miscues resulted in dropping points. Points that were there for the taking. Liverpool dominated possession, maintaining control of the ball 71% of the match. Shots were equally in favor of Liverpool, 35 to 5. THIRTY-FIVE shots and only allow a handful yet you don't win the game. Thirty-five shots also points to a lack of finishing ability. When you take 35 shots you need to score more than a goal.

This may may be where Liverpool miss a pure scorer. A scorer they once had in Luis Suarez but have lacked since. Looking at other top clubs in recent years and they have someone who finishes. Harry Kane, Aguero, Diego Acosta, Lukaku to name a few. Who does Liverpool have with this level of finishing skill?

Corners showed a similar story, with Liverpool having 12 to Burnley's 2.  However, Burnley did have two clear opportunities from theirs as free runners were able to head the ball. Liverpool weren't able to put much, if any, pressure on Burnley from their corners.

So yes, this draw feels like a loss. It feels like Liverpool let one get away. It feels like they gave away 2 points. And supporters are frustrated. Some are going too far though.

While I understand the frustration supporters need to look at the big picture. The season is a long one and nothing is decided in the opening weeks. Take a look back at previous Premier League Chanpions and it won't be hard to identify teams that got off to a similar start. The important thing is to build as a squad, to improve throughout the season and to play your best ball after Christmas.

And, Burnley is no pushover. This year they are playing well, even away from home. In addition to today's result, they also drew against Tottenham. And, they beat Chelsea on the road as well. Tottenham, who drew to Burnley earlier this season had a 0-0 draw today against Swansea City. Other top clubs face similar issues.

So, it's not time to panic yet. It's not time to give up on the season. It's not time to give up on Klopp or on this team. But it is OK to be frustrated and to feel as though the Reds lost a game today.

If they want to compete for the title these types of games moving forward need to deliver better results, that is for certain. But at this point it's way too early to push the panic button.
